MASS MEDIA AND MASSIFICATION OF TERTIARY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA: NEW VISTAS AND NEW POSSIBILITIES

Abstract :   This Paper Examined The Role Of Mass Media In The Proliferation Of Tertiary Education In Nigeria. The Paper Observed That Are More Unadmitted Applicants Into The Universities, Polytechnics And Colleges Of Education Yearly Than In 1980s/1990s When There Was Less Number Of Such Tertiary Institutions In The Country. It Revealed That Only About 19.52 Percent Of People Who Sought For Admission Between 2004 And 2014 Were Actually Successful Leaving A Total Of 80.48 Percent Unadmitted. While Conceding The Possible Impact Of Such Measures As Establishment Of Distance Learning Centres, Open Distance Learning Outlets, Such As Open University System; And Incorporation Of E-learning Modules Into The Academic Programmes Of Tertiary Institutions As Ways Of Increasing Access To Tertiary Education, It Argued That The Mass Media, Particularly The Radio, Can Be Put To Better Use In This Regard Considering That The Aforementioned Measures Are Prone To Problems Of Carrying Capacity, Dearth Of Infrastructural Facilities, Financing Challenges And Problem Of Poverty Affecting Most Nigerians.
